LPGA Record Broken

Lydia Ko has hoisted herself up into the number one spot on the Women's World Golf Ranking list - and she is not yet 18.

The 17-year-old , South Korean New Zealand star put the final pin in place in her stunning and historical rise to prominence when she was edged by just one shot into a three-way, second-place tie by South Korean Na Yeon Choi in the LPGA's Coates Championship won in Florida at the weekend

Ko eclipsed even Tiger Woods, the 21st Century's most famous golfer, who was 21 when he became men's youngest World No in 1997.

Ko was deeply awed by her unexpected promotion

"It's amazing," she said. "It's a huge honour to be in that ranking. All I was focused on doing was trying to play my best."

Previously South Korean Jiyai Shin, then aged 22 in 2010, was the youngest ever women's world No 1

Ousting South Korea's Inbee Park and claiming the World crown, will come as some compensation for Ko who disappointingly surrendered a four-stroke overnight lead to Choi in what was the opening LPGA event of the season.

Records are nothing new to Ko. As long ago as August 2012 she became the youngest winner ever of an LPGA Tour when she won the Canadian Women's Open at the age of 15.

She turned professional in October 2013 and has since won five times on the LPGA Tour and once on the Ladies European Tour.

"I'm just going to focus on my golf, not the rankings," she added. "The rankings always come after the results."
