On the US PGA Tour, the American Michael Thompson won his first tournament on Sunday when he was victorious at the Honda Classic.

As windy weather caused tricky playing conditions during Sunday’s final round in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Thompson held his nerve to edge out Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy by two strokes for the title. A birdie on the final hole took Thompson to one-under par for the day, while he carded a score of nine-under for the tournament.

After tying for the lead overnight, Thompson carded an eagle on the third hole of the final round. The remaining fifteen holes were a mixed bag, with four bogeys and three birdies appearing on Thompson’s score card as he navigated the difficult playing conditions brought about by the wind.

Earlier in the tournament, world number one Rory McIlroy caused a stir when he withdrew from the tournament after a particularly challenging first round. Former world number one Tiger Woods also went home after a disappointing start on Thursday.

The European Tour completed its South African leg last week, with local favourite Dawie van der Walt winning his first title on the Tour at the Tshwane Open.

As the final round unfolded, van der Walt seemed determined to break away from his competitors from the moment he teed off. The South African was tied for the overnight lead with four other players including his nearest rival and countryman, Darren Fichardt.

After settling into the final round over the first few holes, van der Walt sank an eagle putt at the fourth hole to set the pace for the rest of the round. Though Fichardt recorded two birdies on the front nine, he was unable to keep pace with van der Walt, who carded birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. The back nine was a challenge for both players, with bogeys all-round. However, van der Walt was able to hold his nerve and clinched the title by two strokes.
