Golf Results - 04 March 2013

In the United States, the American Matt Kuchar was victorious at the World Golf Championships after a gruelling week of competitive play.

As the WGC finally came to a close on Sunday after snow and icy weather caused a delay on the opening day, Kuchar held his nerve to secure a 2 &1 victory over compatriot Hunter Mahan at Dove Mountain Golf Club. Mahan turned up the pressure on the back nine during Sunday’s final round, but Kuchar was unshakable as he kept his focus to secure a win.

Kuchar won all six matches to lift the trophy at his fifth career title on the PGA Tour. After winning last year’s Player’s Championship, the most prestigious event in world golf that is not a major, the American has enjoyed a successful run this season - Kuchar is now ranked eighth in the world.

The European Tour was in recess last week to allow players from the Continent to take part in the WGC in North America. The Tour resumes its South African leg next week when the Tshwane Open will take place at the Copperleaf golf club near the city of Pretoria.

In Women’s golf, the LPGA Thailand tournament was won by Inbee Park of South Korea.

The final round was charged with excitement for local fans as the Thai teen golfing sensation Ariya Jutanugarn took the lead on Sunday. However, Park gave chase throughout the day and as the tournament came to a close she lagged behind Jutanugarn by just two strokes.

Park had carded a 67 to complete the final round, and was already at the clubhouse when Jutanugarn suffered a meltdown at the final hole. A triple-bogey at the last hole allowed Park to snatch victory, while Jutanugarn appeared heartbroken and left the course to be consoled by her sister Moriya. For Park, Sunday’s victory proves once again that consistent play and preparedness on the course always pays off.
